HC Deb 24 July 1970 vol 804 cc297-8W
Mr. Lomas

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will introduce legislation to ensure that pre-packed foodstuffs are marked with the price per unit quantity, that items such as toothpaste should be sold by weight, and that the limit below which confectionery bars need not be marked with weight be lowered from three to one and a half ounces.

Mr. Anthony Grant

No. I do not think that legislation on these lines is desirable.

Mr. Lomas

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will introduce legislation following metrication to ensure that foodstuffs when pre-packed are sold in multiples of 25 grammes.

Mr. Anthony Grant

As the hon. Member knows certain foodstuffs must already be packed in specified imperial sizes. The Board of Trade is discussing with the manufacturers concerned the sizes in which these products should be packed after metrication. I will consult all interested parties before a final deci- sion is taken. It would be premature at this stage to consider controlling the sizes of the packs of other products after metrication.
