HC Deb 24 July 1970 vol 804 c237W
Mr. Harold Wilson

asked the Prime Minister whether it is proposed that gifts should be presented to the Governments and Legislatures of Fiji and Tonga to mark their attainment of full independence this year.

The Prime Minister

The good wishes of the British Government and of this House were extended to Tonga when she became fully independent on 4th June this year. Following the passage of the Fiji Independence Bill the whole House will, I feel sure, offer similar sincere congratulations to Fiji on her forthcoming independence in October and to send her best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of her people. The British Government will in due course propose that this House should offer gifts of a Parliamentary nature to the Legislature of Fiji and Tonga. For their part the British Government will also be offering suitable gifts.
