HC Deb 23 July 1970 vol 804 c210W
Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Minister of Technology what was the number of advanced factories built in both Carmarthenshire and the Carmarthen constituency between 1951 and 1964 and 1965 and 1970, respectively; and how much additional employment was provided.

Mr. Ridley

No advance factories were built in either area between 1951 and 1964. Since then, three factories have been completed in Carmarthenshire and two are under construction. One of the completed factories is within the Carmarthen constituency. Only one factory is yet in production, and I cannot disclose the employment figures for a single factory.

Mr. Gwynoro Jones

asked the Minister of Technology what was the number of firms that came to both Carmarthenshire and the Carmarthen constituency in the periods 1951 to 1964 and 1965 to 1970, respectively; and how much additional employment was provided.

Mr. Ridley

I regret the information in the form requested is incomplete, but between 1951 and 1964 10 firms not previously manufacturing in Wales are known to have opened in Carmarthenshire and now employ 4,100 persons, of whom about 3,000 are male. During the period 1965 to date, 16 new firms not previously manufacturing in Carmarthenshire have opened and employ 2,200 of whom about 770 are male. These firms expect to create a further 520 jobs (140 male). The corresponding figures for the Carmarthen Parliamentary constituency are 1951–64 Nil. 1965 to date—three establishments employing 80 persons (50 males). Owing to a change in the method of recording new enterprises from 1966 onwards, the two sets of figures are not strictly comparable.
