§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what will be the total cost to the London Borough of Newham involved in the strengthening of the tower blocks as a result of the Ronan Point disaster; what methods he intends to approve for the council to raise the balance between this total and the Exchequer grant proposed, 167W other than increasing rents or rates; and by how much they have informed him that rates will have to be increased to find the full amounts involved.
§ Mr. ChannonNewham estimates total cost of £1.8 million, including items inadmissible for grant. After making allowance for insurance payments and grant, this leaves loan charges equivalent to just under a penny rate, together with a loss of revenue of £300,000. It is for the council to decide how its share of the cost should be met.
