§ 55. Mr. Peter Archerasked the Minister of Transport whether he is satisfied with the enforcement of present statutory requirements relating to motor vehicle tyres; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Bob BrownThe combined efforts of the police and vehicle examiners provide a reasonable standard of enforcement which will not be relaxed.
Prosecutions for tyre offences increased from 6,395 in 1967 to 18,168 in 1968 and figures for 1969 are likely to be higher again. Tyre defects were a reason for failure in the annual test of about 5 per cent. of cars and about 2½ per cent. of heavier goods vehicles during 1969.
