HC Deb 27 January 1970 vol 794 cc310-1W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what grants from the Exchequer are available to local authorities for the maintenance, upkeep or preservation of buildings of historic or architectural interest.

Mr. Skeffington

Under the Historic Building and Ancient Monuments Act, 1953 grants may be made to local authorities towards the cost of repairs to, and the maintenance and upkeep of, individual buildings (including the contents and adjacent land) of outstanding historic or architectural interest in their ownership or tenancy. The cost of local authority grants for these purposes to owners of historic buildings which form part of a group of outstanding interest may be reimbursed in part.

With the agreement of the Treasury grants may be given in some circumstances towards local authority expenses in acquiring individual buildings of special architectural or historic interest.
