Mr. Clegg

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) on what date plans for a new maternity wing for Victoria Hospital, Blackpool, were first submitted to him; and, under these plans, how many beds were to be provided;

(2) when he expects that the building of a new maternity wing for Victoria Hospital, Blackpool, will begin; and how many beds will be provided.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) what was the estimated cost of the first scheme for a new maternity wing to Victoria Hospital, Blackpool; and how many beds were included in this cost;

Mr. Crossman

I have authorised 181 pay beds in hospitals in the Newcastle region (0.64 per cent. of all available beds). This authorisation covers the use of operating theatre facilities as required.
