HC Deb 25 February 1970 vol 796 cc329-30W
62. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state his plans for increasing the protection and safety of the crews of fishing fleets in the North Sea and further north.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

The Fishing Vessels (Safety Provisions) Bill, which was introduced on 18th February, seeks to give powers to implement six important recommendations by the Holland-Martin Committee of Inquiry relating to the construction and equipment of trawlers. Other recommendations relating to safe working practices on board and to radio will be covered by new clauses the Government will seek to include in the Merchant Shipping Bill before Parliament. Consultation with the industry on these and other matters relating to the safety of trawlers is continuing.
