HC Deb 19 February 1970 vol 796 cc192-3W
Mr. Hobden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what hospitals exist in Brighton for operations for abortion under the National Health Service; and how many operations have been carried out since the Act was passed.

Mr. Crossman

There are gynaecological departments at Brighton General, Royal Sussex County and New Sussex Hospitals. The abortion notifications are not, however, analysed by individual hospitals, but by hospital management committees and the Brighton and Lewes group includes Lewes Hospital which also has a gynaecological department. In the group 78 operations were carried out from 27th April, 1968 (the date when the Act came into force) to the end of that year, and in the first three-quarters of 1969, 153 abortions under the Act were notified. More recent information is not readily available.
