asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what was the total assistance for all purposes paid from national funds to assist the rate income of the county borough of Sunderland for the years 1966–67, 1967–68, 1968–69 and the estimated amount for 1969–70.

The total Exchequer grants paid to the county borough of Sunderland in aid of rates for the years 1966–67 to 1968–69, excluding the police grant, were as follows:—

The police grant for 1966–67 amounted to £275,416; from 1st April, 1967, that grant became payable to the Durham Police Authority.

For 1969–70 only the amount of rate support grant is known at present. This is £7,716,920 compared with £6,843,123 in 1968–69, £6,319,990 in 1967–68 and corresponding grants for 1966–67 amounting to £4,926,061.
