asked the Minister of Transport (1) if he will issue a general direction to British Railways to demolish derelict and unsightly engine sheds, signal boxes and other such railway buildings;

(2) if he will issue a general direction to British Railways to clear rubbish regularly from disused railway tracks to prevent them becoming an eyesore.

No. My right hon. Friend would not regard these matters as appropriate for a general direction.
