HC Deb 12 February 1970 vol 795 cc386-7W
Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost to the economy of Great Britain by fire during each of the last two years; and what action he is taking to reduce this.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

Estimates published by the British Insurance Association put direct fire losses in 1968 at £100 million and in 1969 at £120 million. My right hon. Friend will consider, in the light of the forthcoming report of the Departmental Committee on the Fire Service, whether the publicity and advice on fire prevention which is already available should be reinforced by other measures.
