HC Deb 06 February 1970 vol 795 cc215-6W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the general practice adopted by the Metropolitan Police regarding the keeping of records of motoring offences; why records of such offences which occurred less than nine months ago in the Tottenham area have been destroyed; and whether all records are destroyed within nine months.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

Where a fixed penalty is paid, the Metropolitan police copy of the original notice is usually destroyed seven months after the date of issue. Where a fixed penalty has not been paid and proceedings have been taken for the alleged offence, the copy of the notice is usually destroyed six months after the court hearing. In either case the copy may be kept longer if there has been correspondence on the subject. In cases not dealt with under the fixed penalty system, records of convictions are kept for much longer periods. Records are also kept of disqualifications from driving during the currency of the disqualification.
