HC Deb 03 February 1970 vol 795 cc93-4W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what were the balance of payments figures on the combined current and long-term capital accounts for each quarter of the years 1964 and 1969, respectively, with figures of the overseas investment in Great Britain for each period; and how the end of the year figures of the balance of payments compared with the target set.

Mr. Taverne

The information is as follows:

£ million seasonally adjusted
Current and long-term capital account combined Private investment in the United Kingdom (net)
1964–1st quarter -180 + 30
2nd quarter -214 + 20
3rd quarter -147 + 85
4th quarter -203 + 17
1969–1st quarter - 61 + 131
2nd quarter + 72 + 196
3rd quarter + 214 + 157
4th quarter n.a. n.a.
The full results for fourth quarter will not be published until March but it is probable that in the three quarters to the end of 1969 we earned an overall surplus substantially greater than the £300 million interim objective my right hon. Friend set for the current financial year.
