HC Deb 02 February 1970 vol 795 c55W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what is the estimate for the current year for public expenditure on the development of sport in England and Wales; to how many organisations grants are made; and what is his estimate of the number of people benefiting.

Mr. Denis Howell

The total Vote provision for grants for sport and physical recreation in England and Wales in the current financial year is £2.032 million. Grants are made to 125 national voluntary organisations for headquarters administration and coaching or for participation in international events or both: and so far this year capital grants have been offered to some 300 local sports clubs. I am satisfied that the benefits from these grants are widespread among those who take part in sport although I cannot estimate the numbers involved.
