§ Mr. Bishopasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what is the estimate for the current year for public expenditure on the development of sport in England and Wales; to how many organisations grants are made; and what is his estimate of the number of people benefiting.
§ Mr. Denis HowellThe total Vote provision for grants for sport and physical recreation in England and Wales in the current financial year is £2.032 million. Grants are made to 125 national voluntary organisations for headquarters administration and coaching or for participation in international events or both: and so far this year capital grants have been offered to some 300 local sports clubs. I am satisfied that the benefits from these grants are widespread among those who take part in sport although I cannot estimate the numbers involved.
