§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications (1) whether he will initiate discussions with 226W the various trades unions with membership in the employ of the Post Office Board to ascertain their views on the type of person who, in the opinion of the workers within this industry, is most likely to succeed in improving worker-management relationships, public relationships, and the working conditions of the staff together with profitability of the industry; and if he will consider appointing this person as chairman of the Post Office Board;
(2) whether he is now able to make a statment on the appointment of a new chairman of the Post Office Board; what salary or what conditions this man will receive; and whether he will publish his professional and other qualifications;
(3) whether he will appoint the present General Secretary of the Post Office Union as Chairman of the Post Office Board;
(4) whether he will appoint Mr. Victor Feather, the Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, as Chairman of the Post Office Board;
(5) whether he will appoint Mr. Clive Jenkins, the General Secretary of the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs, as Chairman of the Post Office Board;
(6) whether he will appoint the General Secretary of the Post Office Engineering Union as the Chairman of the Post Office Board.
§ Mr. ChatawayI am not yet in a position to make a statement about the Post Office's new Chairman but shall bear the hon. Member's suggestions in mind. I expect the salary to be the same as for other chairmen of major national industries.
