HC Deb 10 December 1970 vol 808 c164W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of first-year students in all higher education establishments in Great Britain who are taking science-based subjects; what percentage of the total first-year student intake this represents; and how this compares with the previous five years.

Mr. van Straubenzee

In the autumn of 1969 some 55,400 students started full-time and sandwich science-based courses at undergraduate level in universities or in further education institutions in Great Britain. This represents 53.6 per cent. of the total full-time student intake at this level. Corresponding figures for the three previous years are:

Entrants to science based courses Percentage of intake
Autumn 1966 44,700 54.4
Autumn 1967 51,350 56.2
Autumn 1968 54,240 55.0

Figures for earlier years and for autumn 1970 are not available.
