HL Deb 08 December 1970 vol 313 cc928-30WA
LORD ALLERTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why the Forestry Commission have first planted thousands of hardwood trees and then poisoned them.

EARL ST. ALDWYN

The Forestry Commission have used selective herbicides to kill immature hardwood trees in a number of plantations where, in the light of later experience, softwoods had a better potential. For amenity reasons this policy was suspended a year ago throughout the Commission; and in any case it will not be resumed in areas where amenity is important.

House adjourned at eighteen minutes past nine o'clock.
