HC Deb 04 December 1970 vol 807 cc480-1W
Mr. Gorst

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has to merge the National Heart Hospital with another London hospital; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Alison

The Boards of Governors of the National Heart and Brompton Hospitals were informed in 1968 that it was proposed to start rebuilding both hospitals in 1973–74 on the site of the Brompton Hospital. The two associated Institutes of the University of London are also to be amalgamated and rebuilt as part of this redevelopment. The medical and lay staffs of the hospitals and institutes have been engaged jointly in planning the new Centre since 1967.

After consultation with the University my right hon. Friend has now decided that the two hospitals will be brought under a single Board of Governors on 1st April, 1971.
