HC Deb 02 December 1970 vol 807 cc380-1W
63. Dr. Miller

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is satisfied with the progress made under the Clean Air Act, 1956; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Younger

Considerable progress has been made. Emissions of smoke, grit and dust from industrial premises have been greatly reduced; and in the central belt, for example, about 40 per cent. of houses are now covered by smoke control orders.

I would, naturally, like to see quicker progress with smoke control, but there is a possibility at present of temporary shortages of solid smokeless fuel.
