§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Social Services by how much he estimates the various stated social service benefits have been reduced in purchasing power since 17th June to the latest stated date; by how much he anticipates a further fall when the various price increases and tax adjustments now anticipated have been fully implemented; and whether he will take steps to increase these benefits by the last-mentioned figure.
§ Mr. DeanFrom June to October this year, the purchasing power of social security benefits fell by about 2.2 per cent., as measured by the general index of retail prices. Supplementary benefits have since been increased. On the question of future estimated movements in the retail prices index, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to him by my hon. Friend the Financial Secretary to the Treasury on 24th November.—[Vol. 807, c.65.]
