HC Deb 23 April 1970 vol 800 c123W
1. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Overseas Development how many students from developing countries were admitted to British universities in 1965; what grants they received and at what total cost; how many have now returned to their country of origin: and how many are still in this country.

Mrs. Hart:

1,529 under official schemes sponsored and administered by my Department, the British Council and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission; additionally, 2,036 were already studying here under such schemes at the beginning of the year. Details of individual grant payments are not recorded separately; the cost of the full officially sponsored training programme in Britain in 1965 was £3.5 million. The number of students sponsored by my Department since 1962 who have not returned home is less than.4 per cent. of the total. Thirty-nine of the officially sponsored students admitted to British universities in 1965 are still studying here they are mostly medical and architecture students whose studies normally cover five years or more.
