asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take steps to ensure that statistics about Commonwealth immigrants provided by Government Departments shall be accompanied by an explanation of their bases and by any background information that would help in their interpretation.

Mr. Crossrman:

If, as I assume, the Question refers to the recent publication by the Registrar General of figures relating to births to parents themselves born in Commonwealth and other countries overseas, this was accompanied by a very full background note. As such figures had not been published before, special guidance was given on their interpretation; and this effort was generally welcomed.
