HC Deb 22 April 1970 vol 800 cc114-5W
Mr. Lane

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total public expenditure on grants to university students and all students in higher education in Great Britain, respectively, in 1969–70.

Mr. Edward Short:

In 1968–69, the latest year for which firm figures are available, total expenditure by local authorities, the education departments and research councils in grants to students in further and higher education amounted to £129. 5 million, including about £.66. 0 million for university students. The total includes some expenditure, not separately identifiable, on grants to students taking non-advanced courses in further education establishments. I expect that expenditure in 1969–70 will prove to have been somewhat higher.
