HC Deb 21 April 1970 vol 800 cc84-5W
38. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT details giving the total costs of the salaries of the chairmen and members of the nationalised boards and statutory bodies at 1st October, 1964 and 1st April, 1970, respectively.

Mr. Shore:

At 1st October, 1964 there were 44 public boards of a commercial character listed in the annual White Paper on Public Boards, excluding the regional railway boards, and the total salaries of the chairmen and members amounted to about £1,171,000 per annum. At 1st April, 1970 there were 48 boards falling into the same category, and while individual salaries as from 1st April, 1970 are in many cases still under consideration it is estimated that the total salaries will be somewhat in excess of £1,700,000. For those boards which were in existence at both dates the salary figures are for 1964 about £1,125,000 and for 1970 somewhat in excess of £1,300,000.
