HC Deb 21 April 1970 vol 800 cc83-4W
Mr. Willis

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what financial assistance he proposes to give towards the costs of organising the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Edinburgh.

Mr. Ross:

I am writing to the Main Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games Council and to the Scottish Paraplegic (Spinal Injury) Association offering them guarantees of up to £50,000 and up to £10,000 respectively, to help to meet any deficits they may incur in the running of the games with which they are concerned. If the guarantee to the Main Organising Committee is required it will be called upon jointly with the guarantee of up to £50,000 which Edinburgh Corporation has offered the com- mittee and there will therefore be in effect a joint guarantee from the corporation and myself of up to £100,000.

These guarantees are, of course, additional to the grant of £750,000 to Edinburgh Corporation towards the cost of the stadium at Meadowbank.
