asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount collected during the last two years in capital gains tax; what was the net benefit to the Exchequer; and what was the total cost to taxpayers.

Mr. Taverne

£48 million in 1968–69 and 128 million in 1969–70. With regard to the cost of collection I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer I gave to the hon. Member for Worthing (Mr. Higgins) on 26th March. The cost to taxpayers is not known.—[Vol. 798, c. 494–5.]
