§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Minister of Transport (1) if he is aware of the dirt, inconvenience and health hazards arising from the use, on the grounds of lower cost, of fly ash in the construction of urban motorways and that the economic and social cost of using such unpleasant material is transferred to the 293W local residents; if he will prohibit its use in closely built-up areas; and if he will make a statement;
(2) if he is aware that it is proposed to use fly ash in the construction of the Eccles by-pass, and that this will cause unnecessary hardship to thousands of residents in the borough; and if he will issue instructions forbidding the use of such noxious materials in the construction of this roadway.
Mr. Bob BrownI am not aware of specific complaints arising from the use of pulverised fuel ash on highway works. Its properties are well known and steps are taken to avoid any undesirable effects arising from the use of this material.
The Eccles by-pass scheme is a principal road contract for which Lancashire County Council is the appropriate Authority.
Particular provision has been included in the contract to obviate the risk of nuisance arising from use of pulverised fuel ash.
