Lord Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is, to the latest convenient date, the total number of applications received for the Ulster Defence Regiment; how many have been rejected; how many have been received from Roman Catholics; and how many remain to be processed.

Mr. Hattersley

As at 10th April 5,630 applications to join the Ulster Defence Regiment had been received. 496 had been rejected; 1,157 were from Roman Catholics; 2,114 were still being processed.

Lord Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will state, to the latest convenient date, the number of men enrolled in each battalion of the Ulster Defence Regiment; how many of these are from members of the Ulster Special Constabulary; and how many are ex-Servicemen in each respective battalion.
