HC Deb 07 April 1970 vol 799 cc67-8W
Mr. McGuire

asked the Minister of Technology if he will give a general direction to the relevant gas board to prevent the closure of any gasworks in the North-West until supplies of solid smokeless fuel become easier.

Mr. Alan Williams

A general direction would not be appropriate, but we are keeping supplies of solid smokeless fuels under close review.

Mr. G. Elfed Davies

asked the Minister of Technology if he will take steps to encourage hospitals, schools and other buyers of gas coke to convert their appliances to coal in time for next winter, thus freeing smokeless fuel for use by householders in smokeless zones.

Mr. Alan Williams

This is a matter for the authorities concerned, but I am in close touch with the responsible departments about the future availability of fuels.
