HC Deb 26 November 1969 vol 792 c112W
Mr. Pardoe

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the administrative cost to employers in both the private and public sectors of maintaining individual contribution records for all contributors to the National Insurance Fund; and what was this cost per contributor.

Mr. Ennals

There is insufficient information available to make an estimate.

Mr. Pardoe

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the cost to public funds in 1968 of maintaining individual contribution records for all contributors to the National Insurance Fund; what were the main items in this cost; and what was the cost per contributor.

Mr. Ennals

It is impossible to segregate the cost of maintaining individual records from the cost necessarily incurred in ensuring that the right contributions are paid. However, the estimated cost of maintaining the records of flat rate and graduated contributions in the Department's Central Office at Newcastle is about £4¼ million a year. The main items are:

£ million
Wages and salaries 3
Superannuation ½
Accommodation ¼
Postage, stationery and sundry costs ½
Total

The cost for each contributor is just over 3s. a year.
