Q7 and 8. Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Prime Minister (1) what progress has been made since his statement of 26th November, 1968, with the proposed transfer of responsibility for the education of mentally handicapped children to the Department of Education and Science;

(2) what communications there have been from central Government to local health and education authorities, and to regional hospital boards, since 26th November, 1968, concerning the proposed transfer of responsibility for the education of mentally handicapped children to the Department of Education and Science; and if he will make a further statement.

The Prime Minister

Following widespread consultation with all those mainly concerned, my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science will this week be making known the main principles on the provision to be made for the staffs concerned within the education service; legislation will be introduced this session.
