asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will state the amounts paid out of public funds to the Royal Shakespeare Company during each of the past five years, respectively; and what amount of grant is now proposed for the current year.

The Arts Council's subsidies between 1964.65 and 1968.69 have been £88,000, £93,000, £150,000, £200,000 and £221,000. This last figure includes supplementary subsidies of £22,000. During the same period the British Council has also paid nearly £24,000 to the company to meet deficits on overseas tours.

The grant offered by the Arts Council for 1969.70 is £204,000.
