HC Deb 12 November 1969 vol 791 c122W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the population of each of the 13 Welsh counties at the latest date for which the figures are available; and what were their populations in 1921.

Mr. George Thomas

The Registrar General estimates that the population of each of the 13 Welsh counties at mid-1921 and mid-1968 was as shown in the following table. Because of boundary changes a precise comparison of the two sets of figures is not possible for every county, but the only significant effect of a boundary change was the gain by Denbigshire of 2.2 per cent. of the population of Caernarvonshire in 1923.

County 1921 1968
Anglesey 51,200 57,800
Breconshire 61,070 55,120
Cardiganshire 57,650 53,710
Carmarthenshire 176,670 164,790
Caernarvonshire 121,990 120,770
Denbighshire 151,720 181,440
Flintshire 102,080 166,160
Glamorgan 1,271,760 1,258,320
Merioneth 41,780 37,530
Monmouthshire 457,660 462,990
Montgomeryshire 50,950 42,800
Pembrokeshire 91,480 100,360
Radnorshire 21,660 18,210
