HC Deb 11 November 1969 vol 791 cc54-5W
Mr. David Price

asked the Minister of Transport what steps he intends to take to improve the circulation of motor traffic and the safety of pedestrians at the Hounsdown roundabout on the A35 in the parish of Eling.

Mr. Bob Brown

As the hon. Member is aware, the Hampshire County Council are the highway authority for this principal road and it is for them to make plans for the improvement of traffic flows and the safety of pedestrians on it. No detailed scheme for the improvement of conditions at this roundabout has yet been submitted.

A35, Ashurst (Speed Limit)

Mr. David Price

asked the Minister of Transport whether he proposes to accept the proposal of the Hampshire County Council that a 50 miles per hour speed restriction be imposed on the A35 from the Southampton City boundary to the beginning of the 40 miles per hour restriction in the village of Ashurst; and when he expects to reach a decision on this matter.

Mr. Bob Brown

My right hon. Friend has now decided that a 50 m.p.h. speed limit would not be justified, or realistic, on this improved length of dual carriageway. We are writing to the Council to inform them of our views in more detail, and we will keep the future accident record under review.
