HC Deb 11 November 1969 vol 791 c48W
37. Mr. John Lee

asked the Minister of Transport if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy on the planning and environmental aspects of the development of disused railway properties and sites.

Mr. Mulley

It is Government policy to ensure the most beneficial use of such property in the public interest. The British Railways Board accordingly offer surplus land in the first instance to local authorities, who thus have a special opportunity, in addition to any afforded by their planning powers, to consider planning and environmental factors.
