§ Mr. Lubbockasked the President of the Board of Trade how many movements per hour on one runway are achieved on average at London Heathrow Airport; what improvements he estimates could be realised by using the method of alternating take-offs and landings; and whether he is satisfied with the safety of this method of controlling traffic.
269W
Mr. RodgersUsing two runways at Heathrow, one for departures and one for arrivals, the average number of movements per hour has reached 32 departures and 28 arrivals. Mixing departures and arrivals on a single runway, rather more than 50 movements per hour have been possible. Mixing departures and arrivals on two runways has enabled 32 movements per hour to be achieved on each, and it is considered that up to 37 may be possible in exceptionally favourable circumstances.
The present trials of parallel runway working at Heathrow are restricted to daylight hours and good visibility conditions, and safety standards are maintained.
