HC Deb 12 March 1969 vol 779 cc309-10W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what has been the activity rate in each of the last 10 years in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.

Mr. Fernyhough

Employee activity rates (for males and females combined) in England, Scotland and Wales for the years 1958 to 1967 inclusive are given below:

Per cent.
Year England Scotland Wales
1958 57.1 55.5 47.4
1959 57.1 56.0 47.4
1960 57.7 56.0 47.9
1961 58.0 56.6 48.3
1962 58.0 56.9 48.2
1963 57.9 56.6 48.3
1964 57.9 56.9 48.4
1965 58.1 56.8 48.6
1966 58.3 57.0 48.5
1967 57.4 56.7 47.4

These activity rates refer to mid-year and are defined as the estimated numbers of employees aged 15 and over (including the registered wholly unemployed) expressed as a percentage of the home population aged 15 and over.

The home population estimates for years up to 1960 are based on the 1951 Census of Population, whilst those for years from 1961 onwards are based on the 1961 Census of Population. Because of the resultant discontinuity between 1960 and 1961 in the population series, it is not possible to calculate activity rates for years up to 1960 which are directly comparable with later years.
