asked the Minister of Power how much was spent by the nationalised coal and gas industries on advertising during the latest period of 12 months for which figures are available; and how this compares with the previous 12 months.

The reports of the National Coal Board and the Gas Council show expenditure on publicity in the financial year 1967–68 of £2.81 million and £3.41 million respectively. The corresponding figures for the preceding year were £2.27 million and £2.96 million.
