§ Sir B. Jannerasked the Minister of Transport how many accidents have occurred on the new escalators serving the Victoria Line owing to dazzle; and if he will arrange for his Chief Inspecting Officer of Railways to consult with London Transport on measures to minimise the effect of this dazzle.
§ Mr. MarshThere is no statistical information available to show whether any accidents on the escalators serving the Victoria Line have been caused by dazzle. Escalators fitted with metal treads, such as are used on the Victoria Line, were brought into service by the London Transport Board more than five years ago, and have a better safety record than those fitted with wooden treads. The number of accidents which occur to passengers on rising escalators is higher than on those going down, which is when the dazzle can occur; but the phenomenon is being investigated by the London Transport Board.
