§ Mr. Onslowasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what representations he has received from the Surrey County Council about the date set by him for the submission of local authority views on the report of the Royal Commission on Local Government in England; how many similar representations he has received from other local authorities; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. SkeffingtonThirty-eight local authorities, including Surrey County Council, made representations that they should be allowed more time. A deputation from the County Councils Association made the same request. On 23rd July my right hon. Friend wrote to the association, stressing the great importance which the Government place on the need to reach decisions on the Royal Commission's proposals as soon as possible and saying that if, despite efforts, the local authority associations were unable to meet the timetable, the Government hoped that the delay would be no more than a week or two.
