§ 52. Miss Pikeasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many married women are now employed in part-time teaching in maintained schools in England and Wales; how many more fully-trained married women he expects to recruit for such teaching in the current year; and what he expects to be the net increase in the number of these teachers by the beginning of the school year 1969–70.
§ Miss BaconOn 1st October, 1968, 34,119 women qualified teachers were employed compared to 31,812 a year previously. Separate figures of married women are not available. I expect that married women will continue to enter part-time service in substantial numbers, though there may be some decline in the rate of recruitment because of the improving supply of full-time teachers. The number in service may perhaps tend to decrease but is still likely to remain higher than it was until quite recently.
