HC Deb 26 February 1969 vol 778 cc326-7W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement on plans for the use of Hampton site next to the National Gallery, and also for the vacant site near the Victoria and Albert Museum on which it was once proposed to build a national theatre.

Miss Jennie Lee

It is proposed to use the Hampton site for the construction of a new National Portrait Gallery. This project, which is part of the development of the whole area at present occupied by the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, is expected to be carried out in the latter half of the 1970s.

The future of the vacant site in South Kensington will be a matter for consideration by the Greater London Council when it is handed over to the Council by the South Bank Theatre Board later this year.
