§ Mr. E. Rowlandsasked the Minister of Transport, in calculating the social costs of building new urban motorways, what account he takes of the additional journeys to work resulting from the dispersal of old-established communities settled close to areas of industrial and commercial activity; and what study he makes of the added costs arising from increased pressure on existing roads as a result of this dispersal.
§ Mr. MarshNew urban motorways do not necessarily involve additional journeys or increased pressure on existing roads. What we do try to assess is the general changes in journey patterns. The extent of each study depends on local circumstances.
