HC Deb 03 February 1969 vol 777 cc28-9W
Mr. Hobden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in what circumstances students in the Brighton area received priority in the injection of Asian influenza vaccine over other categories of persons, particularly elderly people.

Mr. Ennals

I have written to my hon. Friend.

Mr. David Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why influenza injections have been made available for football teams; and why a doctor in the Rotherham area cannot get it for his sick patients.

Mr. Ennals

I made arrangements in November with the suppliers for Hong Kong influenza vaccine to be made available first for certain people at special risk. Supplies of this vaccine are not yet meeting demand but increasing quantities are being distributed throughout the country to meet doctors' prescriptions. The vaccination of football teams would not be in accordance with the advice given by my Department and I would not expect them to have secured supplies of the new vaccine since November. No restrictions have been placed on vaccine containing older strains of the influenza virus.
