HC Deb 03 February 1969 vol 777 c18W
Mr. Rankin

asked the Minister of Transport what, under his regulations, are the dimensions, including length, breadth, height and weight, to which a commercial vehicle must conform before it is permitted to operate on British roads; and whether those dimensions comprehend a trailer.

Mr. Bob Brown

The principal size and weight maxima are as followsRigid lorries may be 11 metres long and up to 28 tons laden weight; Articulated lorries (inclusive of semitrailer) 15 metres long and up to 32 tons laden weight; Draw bar trailers up to 12 metres long and 28 tons laden weight; Rigid vehicle/trailer combination up to 18 metres long and 32 tons laden weight. The width limit is generally 2½ metres but no height limits are specified. In some cases design and other factors attract lower limits and there are also arrangements for authorising special vehicles or special uses above the stated maxima.
