HC Deb 09 December 1969 vol 793 cc51-2W
44. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the fact that new roads give a 25 per cent. average increase in traffic flow, and computer-controlled lights at junctions yield a 600 per cent. average increase in traffic flow, he will bring the results of the work of the Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, on city centre traffic in Glasgow, to the attention of the local authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Bob Brown

Whilst I cannot accept the hon. Member's figures, the published results from the two experimental area traffic control systems in Glasgow and West London have given encouraging reductions in traffic delays and show returns in the first year of several times the investment expenditure.

These results will be drawn to the attention of local authorities.
