§ 41. Mr. Bruce-Gardyneasked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT details showing the breakdown of the decline in male employment in Scotland between 1964 and 1968 by industrial sector.
§ Mr. DellFollowing is the information:
NET CHANGES BETWEEN JUNE, 1964 AND JUNE, 1968 IN THE ESTIMATED NUMBERS OF MALE EMPLOYEES IN EMPLOYMENT IN SCOTLAND (Thousands) Extractive industries (Orders I and II of the 1958 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification) -38 Manufacturing industries (Orders III to XVI) -12 Construction (Order XVII) +9 Gas, electricity and water (Order XVIII) -1 Transport and Communication (Order XIX) -14 Distributive trades (Order XX) -18 Other services (Orders XXI to XXIV) +7 Residual* +7 Total, all industries and services -60 * New methods for calculating the employment estimates were introduced in 1966. It was possible to recalculate retrospectively the total employment figures for Scotland back to 1964 but not the industrial analysis. Hence the change between 1964 and 1968 for all industries and services combined is different, by 7,000, from the aggregated change for individual industries.
