asked the Secretary of State for Social Services who have been appointed to the working group following the publication of the Ely Hospital report; and if he will make a statement.

I have so far appointed the following outside membersMr. Geoffrey Howe, Q.C. Dr. G. O'Gorman, M.R.C.S., M.R.C.P., D.P.M., Physician Superintendent, Borocourt Hospital. Dr. J. Revans, C.B.E., M.R.C.P., Senior Administrative Medical Officer, Wessex Regional Hospital Board. Miss F. E. Skellern, S.R.N., R.M.N., S.T.D., Superintendent of Nursing, The Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital. Professor Peter Townsend, Professor of Sociology, University of Essex.

They will work with senior officers of my Department. The Minister of State or I will take the chair. The working party has been set up to assist me pending the establishment of the new service for the regular visiting and scrutiny of hospitals. It will advise on the scope and formation of the new service and other matters of policy arising from the Ely Hospital report, including the conditions in long-stay hospitals and the procedures for dealing with complaints. The Welsh Office will be associated through an observer.
