§ Mr. Archerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants have made representations to the Immigration Service about detained passengers subject to immigration control; what is the nationality of the passengers concerned; and when consultations with voluntary bodies about the setting up of a permanent ports welfare and advisory service for detained passengers will begin.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesBetween 11th November, 1968, and 9th March, 1969, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants made representations on behalf of 161 passengers to whom admission had been refused. 136 were citizens of India, 24 were citizens of Pakistan and one was a citizen of Southern Rhodesia.
On 22nd January my right hon. Friend informed the House that he accepted in principle the voluntary bodies' proposal for a single comprehensive advisory and welfare organisation. The next meeting between the Home Office and the voluntary bodies is to be on 8th May.
